BENEFITS OF OLIVE OIL

What makes olive oil the healthy oil?

Olive Oil as a pain killer?  Really!!!

Health:
Monounsaturated fatty acids may reduce oxidation in coronary arteries
and thereby reduce risk of developing what is known as atherosclerosis.

Saturated fats which are found in butter, dairy and meat have been linked to
increased risk of cancer and heart disease.

Whenever possible, olive oil should replace saturated fats. Another significant
health factor attributed to olive oil is its ability to increase levels of
cardioprotective HDL (the "good") cholesterol.

Olive Oil also contains polyphenols, flavonoids, antioxidants, and minor
constituents (vitamin E, beta-carotene, squalene).  Squalene, polyhenol, and
the flavonoid compounds may help to prevent colon cancer.

Olive Oil may also be instrumental in the prevention of breast cancer.  I have
not located and read the report about this that I understand is from the Harvard
School of Public Health but the article I read stated that women who consume
olive oil more than once per day can reduce the risk of breast cancer as much
as 25% when compared to women who consume olive oil less frequently.

Other studies are looking into the antibacterial and antifungal properties which
may have a beneficial affect upon blood pressure and blood glucose levels.

PLEASE bear in mind that as healthy as olive oil is when used as a nutrition
alternative to other fat sources, it is still high in fat content and should not be
consumed in inordinate amounts. "Everything in moderation" I think is still a
wise saying.

Given the information available about the oil derived from Olives, it can:

- Lower your “bad” LDL cholesterol

- Lower your blood pressure

- Reduce your risk of diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain cancers
including prostate, colon, and breast cancer.

Olive Oil as a Pain Killer:
Olive oil has painkilling properties, say scientists who have discovered a new
compound in extra-virgin oil that acts the same way as anti-inflammatory drugs.

The compound, which they've named oleocanthal, has the same pain relieving
qualities as ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),
the research team report in the journal Nature today.

They say while olive oil won't necessarily cure a headache, it may hold the key
to the benefits of the Mediterranean diet.

The researchers estimate that 50 grams of olive oil provides about 10% of the
ibuprofen needed for adult pain relief, which means you'd need to swallow half
a kilogram of oil to get the benefits of one dose.

This is why Keast says the health benefits of olive oil are more likely related to
long-term benefits of NSAIDs, which include protection against cardiovascular
events, cancer and even dementia.

"If you could have a low level of [oleocanthal] in the body it may be beneficial,"
he says.

"In general you would say there may be very low levels of reduction in the pain
response but presumably [its benefits would be] more a chronic long-term thing.

Serendipitous discovery
Lead researcher Dr Gary Beauchamp, director at the Monell centre, stumbled
on the discovery at a recent molecular gastronomy conference in Sicily.

While tasting local olive oils, he noticed a sting in the back of his throat and
realised it was an identical sensation to what he had experienced after
swallowing ibuprofen.

"I was startled to notice that the throat sensations were virtually identical," he
says.

Subsequent studies revealed that like ibuprofen, oleocanthal inhibits the activity
of the cyclooxygenase enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2.

These enzymes are activated as part of the body's inflammatory response to
injury and cause pain by stimulating the production of prostaglandins, which
irritate nerve endings.

NSAIDs, which can target one or both of the COX enzymes, suppress COX
activity.

Oleocanthal levels are highest in oil from early season olives, newly pressed or
extra virgin oil

What else can you do with Olive Oil besides using it in your diet? How about
burn it in your diesel truck, car, tractor or generator?

Sound interesting? If we don't subsidize it like Solar Energy so that prices are
inflated way out of line and can get enough private enterprise operations to
work on this, it has some possibilities! Take a look at http://www.biodiesel.com
